Better late than never

Looks like I was tagged for a meme by the matriarch of the Lemony family about two weeks ago. Must try harder to keep up on blog reading.

Three Things meme. The three things are supposed to be things that you would like to see occur in your lifetime--serious or silly or sentimental…(leaving out Peace In Our Lifetime, Cure for Cancer, all the standard stuff)

Wow...

I can't say Whirled Peas or anything big like that? Do I actually have to be realistic?

1) A Russ Feingold presidency/vice presidency/cabinet position/whatever will give him some additional power in War-shington. We desperately need someone like Russ in a national position of power.

2) I want to see legalized gay marriage. I could go on a huge rant, but I won't, because it's nothing that hasn't been said on a zillion or so blogs, 50 times better than I can put into words.

3) You know the saying "to the world you are one person, but to one person you are the world?" For whoever would think of me as their world, I want to see that I have been a positive influence in that person's life, so that they can pass that positive influence on to others, so when I am gone, my life will have meant something.

I'll resist tagging other folks, because I'm not sure my little blog is read by three people who blog, LOL.

How many sources does it take?

We've made a couple of meat runs in the last week or so, due to really good sales. For some reason, boneless, skinless chicken breasts for $1.88/lb. really excites me - have I really become that domesticated?

Anyway, when we buy a lot of meat I like to package it up in dinner-sized portions so I'm not constantly thawing an entire package of something, then worrying about using it all up in the coming few days.

For a long time, portion control has been our enemy (as opposed to eating crap food - the stuff we eat is pretty healthful), so I decided this time around to package it in actual, normal, health-profession-recommended serving-size portions - i.e., six ounces for one dinner - three ounces for each of us - and start cooking proper portions of everything I make for dinner. And I'll tell you something - sometimes it's harder than it sounds.

Take pasta, for example... I found a few websites saying that two ounces of dry pasta, when cooked, become one serving. I found a few other websites saying that half a cup of cooked pasta is one serving. I also found a few websites indicating that one serving of cooked pasta is roughly the size of a tennis ball. Upon conjuring up a mental picture of a tennis ball, then looking at a half cup measuring cup, I was further confused - a tennis ball looks much larger than a half-cup measuring cup.

Well, since I've never had to gauge how much cooked pasta comes from two ounces dry pasta, I weighed out four ounces of dry pasta and boiled away. The resulting amount of cooked pasta was not only much larger than two half-cup servings, it appeared to be larger than two tennis balls as well.

But I did come away with the knowledge that when paired with three ounces of chicken breast, sauteed mushrooms and some other lovely veggies on the side, two ounces of dry pasta, when cooked, is definitely enough food for dinner, possibly more than enough if enough veggies are present.

So how much damn pasta is one serving, anyway? Because I have a feeling I made too much.

Work schtuff

I found out that no matter what schedule I wind up with, the likelihood that I'd have to switch supervisors before October is fairly low (according to the latest info, anyway). I'm going for the schedule I really want and since it doesn't appear that many other people will want it (because who wants a sales job working 3:00 PM - Midnight, anyway?), I'm fairly confident I'll get it.

I also applied for the open position in the other department.

Update...

Wow, has it been almost a month? Jeez. Not much is really new here at Chez Beenie. Work, sleep, clean, work, sleep, clean, etc.

A schedule change at work is looming, during which I'll have to decide whether I want a schedule closer to my husband's and risk having to be on a different team than the one I'm on now (same department I'm in now, but with a new supervisor), or only change my schedule a little and hope to keep my supervisor. I like my supervisor. Don't get me wrong, the one I'd end up with if I get the schedule I really want is a really nice guy and I really like him, but I think that as it relates to my position, I'll be more likely to thrive under my current supervisor.

There may be a chance that I'll be able to get the schedule I want AND keep my current supervisor, I'll have a better idea of that sometime next week.

Of course there's also the other possibility - there's a position open in a different department that would be less stressful, which I think I'd be good at, but would probably be a pay cut. And I really think I'm starting to get the hang of this sales thing, so I don't want to give up on it so quickly.

So much up in the air...
