30 years ago today...

On November 11, 1975, my father and uncles lost their dad. Grandpa had just turned 53 years old. Too soon. His children were 28, 23 and two weeks shy of 18. Much too young to lose a parent.

On that day, my beloved grandmother lost the love of her life.

I'm sorry I never got to meet you, Grandpa. I've been told that you were a wonderful and incredible man. You served in our armed forces, raised three boys, provided for your family, made your own wine (must have gotten that foodie thing from you, huh?), and served as Chief in a number of NYC fire stations. But the only thing that truly matters to me is that you made my Grandma happy.

Rest in peace, Grandpa - and thank you for loving my Grandma.

It's been a while...

Okay, so here's the update...

The apartment is fabulous. Well, by our standards, anyway. Not NYC-overlooking-Central-Park faboo, but very nice compared to what we left behind. All of our stuff is here, thanks to my hubby and a bunch of excellent friends (I had to work on The Big Day). It's just not unpacked yet, so it's not quite home, but I made some headway yesterday when I unpacked some of the tchotchkes that I keep in the living room. Not anywhere near complete, but it'll do for now.

I have some stuff I want to buy that we either didn't need or didn't have room for in the old place, like an over-the-door spice rack for the pantry (we had a separate cabinet for spices built right into the kitchen wall at the old place) and a magazine rack for the bathroom (no space at the old place). And I wouldn't mind getting this, because my mom already told us she got us this for Christmas, but it's not a neccessity. I'd also like to get a few of those baskets that slip over a shelf to make better use of the space in the pantry. And a new garbage can that's a little more user-friendly, but again - not a necessity.

The bed is weird, because we got a new frame. The old one broke a while ago, so there was a dip in the middle of the bed - I loved it. Then comes the new frame, resulting in a perfectly flat mattress, so not only have I been sleeping in a strange place, but my bed is weird, too.

After being nervous and skittish in the weeks leading up to the move, Snowball has been Mr. Mush since we got here. Someone told me that cats don't feel emotions like we do, but I can't help but wonder if he thought we were giving him away since the last time he saw stacks of boxes in his house was when we first got him - his owners had to give him up because of a move. We're still here, hence the mush. {shrug}

All in all, a decent move.
