I started a 401(k) last week. It's about damn time. My mom thinks I should have waited until Bryan and I bought a house, seeing as we currently have very little saved toward a down payment, but the way I look at it is this: no matter when we're able to buy a house, we'll want to retire sometime.
Plus, I think no matter whether or not she'll come right out and say it, mom wants to be a grandma soon, and Bryan and I have always said "mortgage before baby." I think she's disappointed that we've taken a step that might delay her eventual grandmotherhood. ;)
In response to the age old question "when will you two have a baby?," Bryan and I have been saying "it'll a couple of years" since just before we got married.
We've been married for over three.

I think the 401k decreases your taxable income & lets you declare some of it your on taxes. Not really sure, my accountant takes care of all that for me! :-)
My father was quite insistent that I contribute to my 401k as soon as I started my job. I now contribute the maximum allowed under NYS law. Its a pain, but when I see my quarterly statement, I grin! :)
Ciao!

Posted by: mel at January 16, 2006 10:51 AMCongrats on the retirement planning. Babies will sneak up on you before you know it. Soon your house will be a palace of plastic crap. Whee!
How ARE you? How dumb is it that I haven't brought Julia over to meet you yet? When can this happen?? Forcriminysakes, you're ten minutes away. I suck! But she's cute, and will be worth the wait. ;)
